There are though, aren't there, more reasons than one to propose an amendment like this?

Bringing up these books and opening discussion on them is part of broaching the issue, provoking discussion and even educating Synod about the atonement.

So, I wonder if the amendment really 'failed'.Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11619120700915546597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37116884.post-4619411855698157762007-10-01T20:49:00.000+10:002007-10-01T20:49:00.000+10:00Just a correction - the original motion actually m...Just a correction - the original motion actually mentions the Dean of St Albans. Here is the motion that passed -

Synod -

a) Notes with concern recent public comments denigrating a penal substitutionary understanding of the atoning death of Christ, for example during Easter 2007 from the Dean of St Albans in England, and affirms the biblical teaching that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son truly incarnate as a human being, died in our place, bearing the curse of the Law and paying the penalty for our sin, and by so doing reconciled us to God, expressed God's determined love for us and together with his resurrection accomplished a complete victory over the principalities and powers, and

b) requests the Diocesan Doctrine Commission to provide a report which explores the importance of penal substitution in understanding the Bible's teaching on the atonement.Craig Schwarzehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11156017639962303656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37116884.post-64110110463559162002007-10-01T17:04:00.000+10:002007-10-01T17:04:00.000+10:00Hey Craig - thanks for your comments.I'm saddened ...Hey Craig - thanks for your comments.

I'm saddened to hear that you believe the abovementioned piece is "pedantic" and "mean spirited". I certainly can't understand in what respect you consider the piece pedantic. And as much as I was aiming to make a sustained and vigorous criticisms of the motion (as I believe the motion thoroughly deserves), it was certainly not my intention to be mean spirited. I would certainly ask you to consider my comments within the context of other blog entries I have written, which include praise for Sandy himself, for Christians in the Media and Archbishop Jensen. Still, at the end of the day, you're perfectly entitled to believe what you like about my piece and respond accordingly.

All of that said, I'd be very interested with your take on some of the issues I raise and whether you believe my criticisms have any validity. If not, I'd be interested in knowing where you disagree with my point of view.David Castorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17367908059008038221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37116884.post-40857365738177223372007-10-01T13:50:00.000+10:002007-10-01T13:50:00.000+10:00David this is such a pedantic and mean spirited pi...David this is such a pedantic and mean spirited piece.
